This day should be a special day for everyone as everyone is special on this day… on birthday! Especially kids love their birthday – they may eat sweets, have fun, be loud; they get gifts, have a party and a cake with candles; and they certainly are in the centre of attention!

Your birthday party should always be wonderful and fun (though, being an adult, it reminds you of how time flies away) – with family and friends, many gifts, cake and candles… and also with a special birthday decoration.

Candles with the RAL Quality Mark, be it dinner candles, pillar candles or tea lights, shaped like flowers or hearts, are available in many colours and shapes and can easily be integrated in any decoration – romantic or playful, girly, festive or elegant.

And when blowing out your candles on the cake (no matter how many!), don’t forget: MAKE A WISH!

Beliefs and Traditions
The tradition of the birthday candle has also another meaning (in addition to reflecting one’s age in the number of candles and making a wish before blowing them out). On the one hand, while burning, a birthday candle symbolically shows how the years have passed; on the other hand, in archaic beliefs, the fire of the flame should protect the birthday boy or girl from evil spirits.

The tradition of celebrating one’s birthday is quite recent. Until the 19th century only the upper class used to celebrate birthdays. Slowly, this tradition was adopted in Protestant families, while Catholic families kept celebrating their name days. Finally… and fortunately, the wonderful birthday celebration has been accepted everywhere!
